SAVES was incorporated in 1996 as a 501-c-3 not-for-profit corporation to address the needs of homeless and needy cats and their caretakers. SAVES promotes Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) of felines, as well as spaying and neutering of companion animals. TNR is the only effective and humane solution to feral/stray feline overpopulation. TNR is a nonlethal method whereby stray or feral cats are humanely trapped, evaluated, vaccinated and sterilized. Kittens and tame cats are adopted into good homes and the healthy feral cats are returned to their familiar habitats under the lifelong care of dedicated volunteers. What should I do? Concerned Mom Dear Concerned Mom: Please note that often times the tests for FIV and FeLV (Feline Leukemia Virus) are false positive for kittens. You should enhance your kitten's diet with high quality nutritious kitten food and any vitamins/supplements your vet may recommend and have him/her retested in two months. Testing positive for FIV is not a death sentence! Most kittens/cats that test positive for FIV, live long, healthy lives with no symptoms at all when well cared for. FIV is a slow virus that affects a cat's immune system over a period of years. It is a cat-only disease that cannot be spread to humans or other animals. FIV is not even easily passed to other cats. It cannot be spread casually like in litter boxes, water, food, snuggling or playing and it is rarely spread from mother to kitten. The virus can be spread only through blood transfusions or seriously penetrating bite wounds, which are extremely rare. FIV positive cats should be neutered/spayed and kept as healthy as possible. The best bet is to keep them indoors free from stress and to feed them a high-quality diet. Should any secondary problems arise (e.g. infections) they should be treated as soon as possible.
